Auto-organize your Downloads folder

Turn a cluttered Downloads folder into tidy, categorized subfolders — by type, size, date, or sensitive keywords.

The File Organizer moves files from a source directory into categorized subfolders inside a target directory. It is non-destructive in spirit: it always scans and shows a preview before moving anything, and you can organize only the files you select.

Organizing moves files (not copies). The original files leave the source folder. Always confirm the target directory before executing.

Step by step

  1. 1Open the File Organizer module from the sidebar.
  2. 2Set the source directory to your Downloads folder, and choose a target directory (it can be the same folder — files go into a named subfolder).
  3. 3Pick one or more organize dimensions: By Extension, By Size, By Date, or By Sensitive Filename.
  4. 4Click Scan Preview to see how files will be grouped.
  5. 5Optionally expand a category and uncheck files you want to keep in place.
  6. 6Click Execute (or "Organize Selected") to move the files.
Choose dimensions at the top, review the grouped preview below before executing.

Organizing by date

Enable the Date dimension to group files by their modified date. Choose a granularity that fits how you browse: Year, Year-Month, Year-Month-Day, or Year-Quarter.

  • Year-Month is a good default for active folders like Downloads.
  • Use "Group files older than (N) years" to sweep everything older than a threshold into a single bucket.
  • Combine Date with By Extension to get nested folders like 2026-05 / Images.

Dimensions stack. Selecting By Extension + By Date builds two levels of nested folders, in the order you enable them.
